I'm interested in joining the SFPA!

Who was Luby and why do we have a Luby Tournament?

From Tom Seymour

"We met in the late 70's when I first moved to SF and joined in the pool scene here. I knew Luby for many years up to his death. He was a sweet and gentle man who loved the game of pool and always tried to help everyone enjoy the game more. He always had friendly advice for new players, encouraged all of us to play more and challenge ourselves, played on many teams in the Tavern League, the now-defunct Sunset League, and of course, was one of the founders of the SFPA. I played with Luby on teams in all those leagues and he was one of those teammates who was always good to be around because of his great love of the game and everyone who played it. And his pool stroke was as smooth as he was. :)"

Luby Pelletier (San Francisco)From the West Coast Challenge Hall of Fame:

Luby was instrumental in putting together the tournaments leading up to the first official West Coast Challenge. Without his vision, the WCC may never have occurred. He was a wonderful man who had the patience and willingness to teach potential players the game of pool, for which he was so fond. He played in at lease a dozen Challenges, helping six of those teams to the title.

Please honor the memory of Luby Pelletier and the spirit in which he and others founded the SFPA by joining us at this year's Luby Tournament. Come and Play or Coach the new players of our league.

Thanks Tom. The "Memorial" Tournaments are more meaningful when we actually take the time to remember those who inspired those tournaments, and for whom they're named. Many league members weren't around at the time (myself included), so not all of us know the history. Thanks for keeping Luby's memory alive even for those who are newer to the league. He's a great person to be honoring, as he represents what is best in our league and what we aspire to.
