Midseason letter from the president

Congratulations for making it to the halfway point in the regular season! We send a special welcome and props to our new venues, teams, and players.

Next Tuesday will be the first of three weeks off this season – the weeks of Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. We encourage you to frequent our sponsor bars and take advantage of the open tables.

We have two tournaments coming up at Family Billiards:
– The 9-ball finals are almost fully set and will feature 16 qualifying players this Sunday, October 29.
– In early December, the Bernie King handicapped event will be contested. This will be a fundraiser for cancer charity.

The t-shirt design contest for the 9-ball tournament is open. As in previous seasons, the winner of the contest will receive free dues in Spring 2024. Please send your design to a member of the board by November 14.

Nominations for four board positions are also now open: Vice President, Treasurer, Member at Large 2, and Head Referee 2. If you are interested in volunteering your time to help the league by serving in one of these positions, please let a member of the board know by November 7.

Additionally, we are looking for a new webmaster. Our web presence has two major elements – the home page and the scoring app. Neither of these requires advanced skills, but the webmaster should have good facility with computers and attention to detail. The home page is run from WordPress while the scoring app was developed by former SFPA member Paul Krohn. The primary time contribution involves setting up matches in the scoring app and finalizing scoresheets after league nights. The webmaster traditionally becomes an at-large member of the board.

There have been an unusual number of rules questions coming up so far this season. When these situations arise, we encourage you to be respectful to your opponents and try to handle the situation amicably. If needed, please reach out to our co-head referees Joina Liao and Jerry Ball. At least one of them should be available during league nights to help answer any rules questions and resolve disputes. Players should remember the principle of Unity in Sportsmanship, which will always be more important than winning or losing a particular game.

Good luck with the rest of the season and happy playing,

Skip

Fall 2023 season is here!

Welcome to the Fall 2023 season of the San Francisco Pool Association! This season marks the 45th anniversary of the league’s founding in 1978. We are fortunate to inherit such a longstanding tradition of competition and sportsmanship.

Tournament schedules have been posted in the Handbook & Downloads section and will be populated into the event calendar over the next few days. For now we would like to highlight three events in particular:

The Captain’s Tournament will take place this Saturday, September 16th, at the Pilsner Inn. One player per team is allowed to compete.

The Luby Invitational will take place the following Saturday, September 23rd, at the Cinch Saloon. All new members and players with sub-.500 records the past two seasons are eligible and participation is free.

And starting September 30, qualifiers for the 9-Ball Tournament will begin. These will take place on Saturdays and Thursdays, with the 16 qualifying players vying for the trophy at Family Billiards on Sunday, October 29th.

Please click through to the specific event pages for more information. Good luck and happy shooting!
